aka Grace Lord Falls
Location: Grace Lord Park, Boonton
Not a lot of people may associate Boonton with the waterfalls. If you happen to be in the neighborhood, please visit it. It is picturesque in all four seasons. Like all waterfalls, the water flow is at its peak in Spring and may be the best time to watch it in all its glory. The fall season definitely adds extra color to the surroundings and makes it more spectacular than the other seasons.
I have been captivated by waterfalls all my life. Like the waves lapping the shore, I never get bored watching water falling over vertical drops. It is true that a powerful waterfall like the Niagara or the Yellowstone awes you by its sheer force, but the smaller ones have its own charm. Waterfalls have been enjoyed, studied, researched and even categorized – Ledge, Plunge, Cascade, Horsetail, Cataract, Staircase, Punchbowl and several others.
I think the Boonton Falls falls under the Cascade category – water falling gradually through what looks like a series of gradients. It definitely doesn’t have enough steps to be called a Staircase. The manmade dam just above the falls is most likely a Ledge with water falling vertically over a “cliff” and making partial contact with the “bedrock”. I am not a big fan of man-made falls. They look pretty, no doubt, but they are still not natural.
According to the World Waterfall database (that should not surprise anyone, there is a database for everything) there are about 17,072 waterfalls in the United States and 67 in the state of New Jersey where I live. A search for Boonton Falls returned a single record. The record says that Boonton Falls is the unofficial name of the Falls and that this also goes by the name of Grace Lord Falls. Total Height and the tallest drop both measure at 22 feet.
